Orange pond builders, water feature care and leak repair

Our home base. Old Towne and Orange Park Acres have some of the county's oldest koi ponds, many built before bottom drains were standard, and renovation is our most common call here.

Pond and water feature conditions in Orange

Every pond, fountain and lake is a small ecosystem that answers to local conditions. These are the ones that shape how we build and service water features in Orange.

    Tap water and fill water

City of Orange water is a blend of Orange County groundwater basin wells and imported Metropolitan Water District supply. It runs moderately hard and is disinfected with chloramine, which ordinary dechlorinators don't neutralize unless they're rated for it; we dose for chloramine on every refill.

    Heat, evaporation and wind

Inland-valley heat: summer highs in the low 90s, Santa Ana wind events in fall that dump debris and spike evaporation, and mild winters that rarely frost. Water temperature in a shallow pond can swing 15°F in a day during a heat wave.

    Soil, grade and excavation

Mostly alluvial loam on the flats with clay pockets toward El Modena and the foothills around Orange Park Acres; decomposed granite on the Santiago Canyon side. Liner ponds need underlayment over anything rocky.

    Predators and wildlife

Great blue herons and black-crowned night herons commute from Irvine Lake and Santiago Creek; raccoons work the Santiago Creek corridor and Orange Park Acres nightly; coyotes along the foothill edges.

    Leaf and debris load

Old Towne and Orange Park Acres have mature sycamores, pines, liquidambars and citrus. Spring jacaranda bloom and fall sycamore leaf drop are the two heaviest skimmer-clogging periods.

    How Orange service is scheduled

Orange is inside our Orange County home route. Assessments, repairs and maintenance visits are scheduled within days, and emergency aeration can be on-site the same day for maintenance clients.

    Local water features worth knowing

If you want to see what balanced water looks like at scale before planning your own feature, Orange has good public examples nearby: Irvine Regional Park lake; Old Towne Orange Plaza fountain; Santiago Creek. The same principles — depth, circulation, filtration sized to the biological load, and shade — apply to a backyard koi pond.

    Pond service questions from Orange

Is Orange tap water safe for koi?

Yes, once it's treated. City of Orange water is a blend of Orange County groundwater basin wells and imported Metropolitan Water District supply. It runs moderately hard and is disinfected with chloramine, which ordinary dechlorinators don't neutralize unless they're rated for it; we dose for chloramine on every refill. We dechlorinate every refill and top-off and test the tap on the first visit.

Why does my Orange pond turn green every summer?

Heat, light and nutrients. Inland-valley heat: summer highs in the low 90s, Santa Ana wind events in fall that dump debris and spike evaporation, and mild winters that rarely frost. Water temperature in a shallow pond can swing 15°F in a day during a heat wave. Add the local leaf and debris load (Old Towne and Orange Park Acres have mature sycamores, pines, liquidambars and citrus. Spring jacaranda bloom and fall sycamore leaf drop are the two heaviest skimmer-clogging periods) and an undersized filter can't keep up. UV clarification, shade and a maintenance schedule fix it.

What's eating the fish in my pond?

Great blue herons and black-crowned night herons commute from Irvine Lake and Santiago Creek; raccoons work the Santiago Creek corridor and Orange Park Acres nightly; coyotes along the foothill edges. Depth of 3–4 ft, overhangs, fish caves and motion-activated deterrents are the fixes that actually work; netting is the last resort.

How much does koi pond maintenance cost here?

Monthly residential service is priced by pond volume, fish load and access, and quoted after a first visit. Most local homeowners land on a monthly plan with a spring clean-out; we'll tell you if your pond needs less.

Do you build new koi ponds locally?

Yes. Mostly alluvial loam on the flats with clay pockets toward El Modena and the foothills around Orange Park Acres; decomposed granite on the Santiago Canyon side. Liner ponds need underlayment over anything rocky. We plan the excavation and base around that, then design filtration, rockwork and planting for a fixed-scope quote.
