Pond clean-out service that resets the system without shocking the fish

A full clean-out resets a pond that has fallen behind: sludge, muck and dead plant matter out, filters rebuilt, and water chemistry brought back before the fish return.

    Our clean-out process

    1. Fish moved to aerated holding tanks with their own pond water
    2. Pond drained, sludge and debris removed, rock and liner rinsed (never pressure-washed bare)
    3. Skimmer, filter media and UV serviced or replaced
    4. Pump and plumbing inspected; leaks and worn seals noted
    5. Refill with dechlorinated water, temperature-matched, bacteria re-seeded
    6. Fish acclimated and returned; follow-up water test scheduled

When you need a clean-out vs. maintenance

If the water smells, the bottom is more than an inch deep in muck, or the fish are gasping at the surface in the morning, the system needs a reset. If the water is mostly clear and the problem is string algae or a dirty filter, a maintenance visit is the cheaper fix. We'll tell you which on the assessment call.

    Signs you need cleaning help

    • The bottom has more than an inch of muck
    • The water smells, especially in the morning
    • Fish gasp at the surface after sunrise
    • String algae covers the rock and the falls
    • The pond hasn't been drained in more than three years

    What drives the cost

Clean-outs are priced by volume, the amount of debris and whether filters need rebuilding. Most residential ponds are a single-day job; large ponds and commercial features run two or more days with fish held under aeration throughout.

    What this service covers

Pond cleaning & clean-outs sits under the wider heading of pond maintenance. Clients tend to call it pond clean-out or koi pond cleaning; whatever the name, the work breaks down into a few distinct jobs:

    Full drain-and-clean

Fish held, pond drained, sludge removed, filters rebuilt, refilled and re-seeded.

    Partial clean and vacuum

Bottom vacuumed and filters serviced without draining, for ponds that haven't fallen far behind.

    Spring clean-outs

Annual reset after winter leaf drop and before summer heat.

    Filter and skimmer rebuilds

Media replaced, baskets and bulkheads repaired, flow restored.

    Post-construction first clean

First service after a new build to remove construction fines and confirm the system is cycling.

Terms you'll hear from our technicians on this work: sludge, muck, pond vacuum, dechlorinator, temperature matching, bacteria re-seeding, holding tank, aeration, biofilm.

    Customer story

A turtle pond rebuilt to run on a weekly back-flush

“Wes and his crew are fantastic. They've been out a couple of times to make it the best possible scenario for everyone. I try to do it as naturally as possible, without chemicals. The bio-filter with the UV light helps immensely. Once a week I back-flush and we're good to go. Clean water. Everybody loves it. The turtles love it.”

    Homeowner

A homeowner on her rebuilt turtle and koi pond: Koi Pros added a bio-filter with UV so the water stays clear without chemicals, and the monthly maintenance that used to overwhelm her is now a once-a-week back-flush.

    Questions about cleaning

How long does a pond cleaning take?

Most residential ponds are a single day. Large ponds and commercial features take two or more, and we schedule so the fish are never held overnight without aeration and monitoring.

Is a spring clean-out necessary every year?

For ponds under trees or without bottom drains, usually yes. Ponds on a maintenance plan with good filtration can often go two or three years between full clean-outs.
