Pond and water feature conditions in San Diego

Every pond, fountain and lake is a small ecosystem that answers to local conditions. These are the ones that shape how we build and service water features in San Diego.

    Tap water and fill water

San Diego imports most of its water from the Colorado River and State Water Project, blended with local reservoirs; it is hard (often 250+ ppm) and chloraminated. Scale control is a standing item on service visits.

    Heat, evaporation and wind

Marine on the coast (low 70s), hot in the inland valleys (Rancho Bernardo, Scripps Ranch in the 90s), minimal frost. Santa Ana winds in fall.

    Soil, grade and excavation

Sandy coastal mesas, clay and fill in the inland communities, canyon slopes with erosion concerns on view lots.

    Predators and wildlife

Herons, egrets and night herons from Mission Bay, the San Diego River and every canyon park; raccoons and coyotes in all canyon-adjacent neighborhoods.

    Leaf and debris load

Torrey pine, eucalyptus, jacaranda and palm; canyon lots get wind-driven litter.

How San Diego service is scheduled

San Diego is on our San Diego County route: weekly routed maintenance, repair visits scheduled around the route, and construction crews dispatched from Orange County for the duration of a build.

    Local water features worth knowing

If you want to see what balanced water looks like at scale before planning your own feature, San Diego has good public examples nearby: Japanese Friendship Garden koi pond (Balboa Park); Mission Bay Park; Lake Murray. The same principles — depth, circulation, filtration sized to the biological load, and shade — apply to a backyard koi pond.

Pond service questions from San Diego

Is San Diego tap water safe for koi?

Yes, once it's treated. San Diego imports most of its water from the Colorado River and State Water Project, blended with local reservoirs; it is hard (often 250+ ppm) and chloraminated. Scale control is a standing item on service visits. We dechlorinate every refill and top-off and test the tap on the first visit.

Why does my San Diego pond turn green every summer?

Heat, light and nutrients. Marine on the coast (low 70s), hot in the inland valleys (Rancho Bernardo, Scripps Ranch in the 90s), minimal frost. Santa Ana winds in fall. Add the local leaf and debris load (Torrey pine, eucalyptus, jacaranda and palm; canyon lots get wind-driven litter) and an undersized filter can't keep up. UV clarification, shade and a maintenance schedule fix it.

What's eating the fish in my pond?

Herons, egrets and night herons from Mission Bay, the San Diego River and every canyon park; raccoons and coyotes in all canyon-adjacent neighborhoods. Depth of 3–4 ft, overhangs, fish caves and motion-activated deterrents are the fixes that actually work; netting is the last resort.

How much does koi pond maintenance cost here?

Monthly residential service is priced by pond volume, fish load and access, and quoted after a first visit. Most local homeowners land on a monthly plan with a spring clean-out; we'll tell you if your pond needs less.

Do you build new koi ponds locally?

Yes. Sandy coastal mesas, clay and fill in the inland communities, canyon slopes with erosion concerns on view lots. We plan the excavation and base around that, then design filtration, rockwork and planting for a fixed-scope quote.
